The Broward County School District won’t be closing high schools anytime soon. In fact, Superintendent Peter Licata expects new academic programs and construction projects at high schools will lead to more students coming back to the district.
“We want to fix the facilities and look at programming,” Licata said in an interview with the Miami Herald. “They (high schools) will be impacted most likely for the positive.”
The district held a series of open meetings with the community over the last few weeks to discuss the future of some 67 underenrolled schools. Five high schools are among them (Blanche Ely, Hallandale, Northeast, Plantation and Stranahan).
Licata plans to present an updated list of schools under consideration for possible closure to the school board on March 20. The district plans to make decisions about which schools would close in June, according to the story.
