Roxy: When Youth Addiction Hits Close To Home

- June 4, 2024

Why would I want to read a book about drugs?

One may automatically think the same if this book is recommended to them. But I disagree, why wouldn’t you?

Roxy can expand your knowledge on the issue of drug-related deaths and addiction, even if it is fiction. Ergo, I believe ‘Roxy’ is a special type of book, an avant-garde. Though this genre is not necessarily original, the way it is written is unique and idiosyncratic.

Roxy is a young adult and science fiction novel written by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman. The book is about two siblings, Ivy and Issac Ramey.

The Real-Life Struggle

One of them dies due to a drug overdose. But the main suspection of the story is, which one? The drugs, which are personified, are Roxy (Oxycontin) and Addison (Adderall).

The novel is told from four perspectives, Issac, Ivy, Addison, and Roxy. It shows how drugs can take over and control teen addicts and the lives of the families who love them.

Through the eyes of the authors, Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman, Roxy is a gritty look at how addiction can change someone’s entire personality.

The Bet For A Desperate Recovery

Roxy and Addison make a bet. Who can make their “mark” overdose first. Any drug can be addictive, I believe, and ‘Roxy’ proves just that.

‘Roxy’ impacted me in a personal way, as I understand what it is like to know someone who is addicted to drugs; specifically prescribed drugs as what is represented in this book. The quote that striked me the most was:

And so there we sit, keeping each other company as we wait for the last petal to fall.”

‘Roxy’ represents how hard it is to backpedal an addiction after you’ve fallen so deep into it. It is a cautionary tale for our generation. I recommend it!

Roxy is a cautionary tale about young adults and their struggle with drug abuse. A fiction novel, the plot is one that teens can relate to.
