Shedding Some Light
Being a high-school with Autism presents daily challenges. Author Ca’Mari Lewis’ sister is Autistic, so natutally, he has a unique understanding of how the disorder affects families and presents everyday challenges to those who are diagnosed. Some of these challenges are due to the disorder. Others are due to our ignorence. Ca’Mari chose to write this story in an effort to educate all of us.
If you look up the definition of Autism, you would read something like this: “a complex neurodevelopmental disorder, manifests uniquely in each individual, presenting challenges in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors.” In everyday life, Autism is a daily struggle.
While its exact causes are unknown, a combination of genetic and environmental factors are likely. What we don’t know is which factor is the greater contributor. As awareness of Autism grows, so does the recognition of the diverse spectrum of experiences within the autistic community. Society is increasingly acknowledging the strengths and perspectives that individuals with autism bring to the table, challenging stereotypes and fostering inclusivity.

Despite increased understanding, individuals with Autism often face significant barriers in accessing support and acceptance.
Stigmas and misconceptions persist, limiting opportunities for Autistic individuals to gain employment, and adapt to a society that fears what it doesn’t understand. Advocacy efforts continue to push for greater inclusivity and accommodations in all phases of an Autistic’s life, but we still have a long way to go in our understanding of the disorder.
In the pursuit of a more inclusive society, education and awareness are critical. Through continued research, advocacy, and support, society can move towards a future where Autism is not seen as a limitation, but rather as a unique aspect of human diversity to be embraced and celebrated.
In addition to societal shifts, advancements in research and technology are also shaping the landscape of Autism understanding and support.
Researchers are delving deeper into the genetic and environmental factors that cause Autism Spectrum disorders. Technological innovations are providing avenues for communication and intervention. From assistive communication devices to virtual reality therapy, these advancements hold promise in enhancing the quality of life and autonomy for individuals with Autism.
Ms. Duhart, an ESE teacher, said helping kids with Atism and special needs also helps her. “I feel as if they need more love than others,” she said. “Kids with Autism have bigger hearts than others.”
My little sister has Autism, and she has such a big heart, it brings me immense joy that she is getting the help she needs.
