Cougar Standard is a weekly editorial product created by the team of student journalists at Coconut Creek High School; a public school of nearly 2,000 students located in Broward County, FL. For readers unfamiliar with our region, the Broward County School District is the sixth largest public school district in the United States.
Cougar Standard is not your typical online school “newspaper.” In fact, our student editorial team is striving to create a new standard of online news and views of intrest not just to our Cougar family, but for our local community and for other high school journalism students. It’s not an easy mission for sure, but we think we are off to a roaring good start. So, who are we?
We Are Student Professionals.
A quarter of our student journalists are members of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ); the nation’s most recognized journalism organization. SPJ encourages the free practice of journalism and holds its members to high standards of ethical standards. Our fellow Cougars do, too.
We Are News Googlers.
Our publication is exclusively online, so our student journalists want their hard work to be read; Not only do we ensure our news, features and special reports are published with the highest standards, we lead by following best practices. One way we do so is by taking part in the Google News Initiative; a partnership between news organizations and the world’s most-used Internet search engine.
We Are Scholars.
The students of Coconut Creek High School are known as “Scholars.” As such, we are learning the fundamentals of journalism as we provide it to our readers. Mistakes will no doubt be made, and we will make some messes, but we will clean them up as soon as they are brought to our attention.
We encourage you to be our “watchdogs.” After all, the only way we learn good journalism is to learn it and to provide it in the best way we know how. That means our readers play a part in making sure we live up to our promise to be always accurate; bold but balanced; fair without exception; and of service to our readers with the most engaging and entertaining student journalism you can find from any other student news source.
